5'5" Recycled board blank from an 'ol broken soft top. took the soft stuff and class off, glued in two stringers of baltic birch. Cut them down to the foam, cut out some random shape, with e-wings and started turning rails last night. It feels really great to finally be shaping a board of my own for the first time even if it takes a few extra steps to get it done

We've had a lot of rain here the past week. like non stop for three four days. I checked the surf evening after work and saw this piece of lumber in the shorebreak. There are tons and tons of old old ship wreaks off our coast. I'd like to know what this tree was used for cause you can see hack marks where it has been cut. I don't know maybe its just a tree that fell down and got washed up but you never know...

Hurricane Irene sucked...a lot of us here were talking (complaining) about how slow the swell season has been thus far this year, including myself. Well all it took was cat 1 to shut us all up that is for sure. It felt as though the businesses here on Ocracoke took the hardest hit from the storm. Not the 95 mph winds and tropical rain but the island is basically shut down to everyone but residents and has been since landfall last Friday. Where most businesses here look forward to Labor day weekend to being the last "hoorah" of their season Irene pretty much took all hopes of going out the summer on a high note and left us all scratching our heads and down in the dumps. The last time the outer banks were effected in such a way was hurricane Isabel. Everyone is talking about how long it took for the workers to get highway 12 back up and running (the one road that connects the entire stretch of the islands), I just hope that they work a lot quicker than they did after that storm. I'm being optimistic though. Had a great surf this morning with Bob and Mikey and I feel as though Isabel was a good learning experience on what needs to get done and what kind of timeframe would be reasonable to look toward. Its a day by day situation however and not too much we all can do but listen to and read the bulletin's being posted daily.

Well, I've been shaping quite a bit recently. (if only i had a few foam blanks to whittle at).....
I've been able to experiment with a few new outlines and shaping methods over the past couple of days thanks to my rekindled love for southeastern pine.
With only my jigsaw and power sander. That's right, no circular sander, grinder, drill press, or even power plainer. I've been able to shape quite a few "hand plains" that I cannot wait to finnish and eventually take to the sea.

Pretty fun little knee slappers today, the crowd was on it for sure unfortunately. The past couple of months I have notice a huge increase of people out at the south end. Even on the shittiest days there will be twenty people on one peak. It is insane! but that is WB for you. To those of you who surf south of the oceanic please be mindful of the other human beings out in the water with you trying to enjoy the same feeling you get out of what small surf we have. Sharing is caring and everyone likes those who share. If only everyone on WB realized that there are others in the water who enjoy the feeling of riding waves just as much as they do.

FIXED! Cost: $7 for a new battery and a bit of my time thanks to the guys at southeastern camera here in Wilmington. To quote Herbie Fletcher "the future is in the past". This camera has had a jammed shutter for over a year. I tried everything, completely took it apart, three new batteries, nearly broke the film advance trying to un-jam it myself. All it took was a little experience and an open ear.

Back in the day the best/most dedicated surfers from California would go to the Islands to find real waves and new challenges. Today if you aren't from California and/or don't prove yourself in those line ups you are basically a no-one in the world of surfing. The surfing Industry today is too wound up in it's self, trying to be marketable to those with money to prolong their habits, whether that be traveling around the world finding perfect waves for themselves, creating trust funds for their grandchildren or maybe just make money for the fact of making money.
It makes me sad to think that surfing has become this marketable. Do you really think the very first people to use the oceans energy to bring them to shore just for the purest form of enjoyment really thought that people just like them would take that same enjoyment and sell it to millions to fund their trips to play golf at turtle bay? Or build a factory in Taiwan to make some shorts that have their name on it just to sell them for 500 times what it took to make to make some money?
I think anyone could answer that themselves, and that answer is NO.
Just like so many others, I believe that John John and other's realize that it is more about "free surfing" and the feeling than turning yourself into a billboard to sell this months newest pair of sunglasses or wetsuit.
So surf for yourself. Even if that means trying new surf crafts to find out what you get the most enjoyment from.
There are soooo many kinds of boards and ways of surfing out there "other than the standard shortboard style that you have been brainwashed to try an aspire to" that you can experience. That is why they were made in the first place, to experience all that your wave has to give to you. No matter what the condition there is a surf craft to accommodate you!

What the f*ck is this Neiman Marcus bull shit? I can understand needing money to keep your shit up and running but my Mom shops from Neiman Marcus. I never thought i'd see the day that swell chart web sites would run ads that 50 year old mothers shop from. To me this shows just how much surfing has turned into a consumer "sport" and not what it really is. This is sad, not only that we have no waves forecasted for the upcoming week but the fact that "surfers" have had to turn to other disgusting corporate sponsors other than the quiksilvers and the billabongs to fund the charts that we look at in hopes to fulfill the little bit of enjoyment that we can find in our week. **I will be editing this post throughout the day so check back later!

Wrote into Eastern Shortboard.... I mean Eastern Surf Mag a while ago after reading a recent issue. They seemed to have a little something to say about my comment on their renowned contest coverage. However I wrote to them nearly a month before the hugely successful duct tape invitational put on by Vans and Joel Tudor. I believe I posted this video in early September sometime. Its all good though, despite the only longboarding picture in the in the current issue is a banner ad by Ricky Carroll supporting Justin Quital, I think they are starting to accept that people do longboard on the East Coast and it can be marketable. Oh yeah and as for Tony Silvagni and Mikey DeTemple pushing longboarding on the right coast there is a reason that Tony spends his summers at home and the rest of the year in Hawaii and following the longboard tour around the world; and DeTemple has been spending most of his time shooting his films on the pacific coast.

We had some really fun waves down here at good old Wrightville Beach. Along with waves we had about nine inches of rain in town and floods all over the place. I was able to get out for a little bit but blew out my knee on a not so great right hander. I'm crossing my fingers it isn't anything too bad. I got hit by the lip and got pushed straight down on my board forcing my front leg to bend to the left, felt a decent pop and smacked the deck of my board just to top it off. Just super sore and doesn't really want to do what its meant to do at the moment, but had some fun ones today none the less. I'm trying to take it easy the rest of the week in hopes of being 100% for a little trip up the coast this weekend.

These photos are from a recent rafting trip down the mighty Gauley River in West Virginia. We had a dandy of a time going down the upper and lower Gauley, camping at the bottom of the lower and then did the upper again the next day. Unfortunately the morning that the above picture was taken a girl lost her life from falling out of a raft and getting caught under a huge rock, because of this they had to reduce the amount of water being let in from the dam exposing most of the rocks. This also made our trip down the next day a lot more gnarles and tons of fun. It just sucks that these things happen.

We had a little wave this afternoon with a good amount of wind. In the right spot every 30 minutes a wave would come in that didn't close out so those were pretty fun. It looks like we've got some more swell on the way for this weekend just in time for me to leave for West Virginia to battle the mighty Gauley river. Should be a good time with all of saturday on the river and campin that night at the bottom of the lower Gauley.

Finally got some waves today. I was able to get out for a little while when it was good and a little while when it was bad, and when I mean bad lets just say the WB Police Department doesn't like us very much. All in all its nice to haves waves and Herriken Earl is on the way to send us more aquatic goodness later this week.

Someone Still Loves You Boris Yeltsin just came out with a new album "Let it Sway". These guys never cease to amaze. Since their fist album "Broom" each album since has been better than the last, but somehow still they keep to their melodic and harmonic roots, which I really like. I got a few fun ones this weekend.

This past weekend we had a little TS'er off our coast here in the state above South Carolina. I was lucky enough to be in the right place in the right time sharing perfect waves with some awesome people.

The third time I've been able to take out my short board all summer, and had soo much funnn

After surfing for about 7 hours straight, myself and a few friends were sitting on the beach watching the perfect uncrowded waves come in. Out of nowhere a green beach tow truck comes flying up with his lights flashing and slams on the breaks, "I need some boards to come with me, someone is drowning down the beach". I throw my longboard on my roof and three others jump in the back of his truck, we are off. The three in his truck are the first in the water. I jump out of my jeep, grab my board and run to the ripped up ocean. At first glance I see the others paddle for one guy on a boogie board so I go over to two others on matts being tossed in the rip and massive shore break. Once I get my two into shore I realize the others aren't just helping on guy out, there is another one face down being dragged in the water. The hero on the boogie board was the first out to help this guy in. Apparently he went swimming without any flotation device, got caught in a massive rip current, had a heart attack and passed in the water. The paramedics were on the beach as soon as they got in but were unable to bring him back. My heart goes out to his wife and children. It just goes to show the amount of power the ocean has. Its so unfortunate that people don't know what to do when put in that situation. Most of the time they can get help in time but those few times every couple of years they just can't get help in time. I really can't describe the way it feels to go from the highest of highs, surfing perfect waves all day long, to the lowest in a matter of minutes. I am so fortunate to have surfing in my life and I wouldn't change it for anything. I realize how many times I take a simple paddle out for granted.

Been busy this week pushing people into waves. More shots from the "lost roll" seen a couple of posts ago. I took that camera on a snowboard trip last winter and left it in the car one night. The other week I put a picture up of myself surfing my 9'6" Eavey. Didn't really think about it too much. The picture was taken a couple of years ago by my good friend Robert Chestnut on one really crappy afternoon on Ocracoke Island in the Outer Banks. Then last friday, feeling really bummed about cutting my foot open one of my friends asked if I was surfing that morning at the south end of Wrightsville Beach I told him about my recent injury and how I hadn't been able to surf for a couple of days. Later that day someone else asked the same question. He told me of the morning surf report on wblivesurf.com that day. I didn't really think anything of it at the time. I mean I have been surfing the south end this year a bunch but I make sure to always wear my leash no matter how many times it gets tangled around my legs, feet, arms, i've even had it wrap around my head after bailing on some shorebreak, because it is the law here. The more I started thinking about it the more it kind of bothered me. I know that there are people out there with red and white boards with yellow birdwells not wearing leashes all over the world, but on WB there is probably only one other person that I just haven't met yet that seems to have a similar sense of style that I do. I just thought it was really funny that they would call someone out like that on the internet like that in such detail.

One more thing. Since we have surf zones here in Wrightsville Beach, if you find yourself in a swim zone with a surfboard you'll be called out in a second and make sure to have something for your ear when they get done chewing you out; however everyday, people get all upset that there little Timmy or Susan got too close to a surfboard because they were splashing around in the surf zones. It is soo frustrating when your doing the right thing by being in the surf zone with your kook cord just to find that you have 25 people frolicking in the water feet in front of you when the "swim zone" completely empty with no one in it. There just isn't something right about that. Maybe its just me.
